Video Production at the Hammer Museum: From the Theater to Online

Tour - register now

Tuesday, March 31, 2020: 8:30am - 1:30pm -

Susan Edwards, The Hammer Museum, USA

The Hammer Museum invites museum colleagues to a tour of our theaters and galleries with a focus on our video production processes. The tour will focus primarily on the full cycle of production for the online videos that document the more than 120 public programs we produce each year in our two theaters. We will also tour and discuss video produced in conjunction with our exhibitions, including promotional videos and digital media artworks in the galleries.

The tour will start with a behind-the-scenes look at the audio-visual technology involved in presenting programs that range from film screenings and lectures to performance art and dance. See how we produce the video documentation for these public programs, which range from 1-2 hours, while livestreaming most of them online. We’ll explain how we distribute this video content online over several channels and re-purpose clips from the programs to share on social media. You’ll also get a preview of a new online video archive that we are developing with the firm cogapp, which will leverage these video materials in innovative new ways, and which is expected to launch in late April 2020. A brief tour of the galleries will explore our video and digital media installations, and our promotional video production, with short presentations about how we produce and promote exhibitions-related media.

Staff will be on hand to discuss programming philosophy and process, technology and staffing, and video production with LiveStream set up; as well as online distribution, social media, and asset management. Members of the cogapp team will also be available to discuss the process of developing the online video archive, and to demonstrate the features that we hope will give Hammer online visitors renewed access to explore and repurpose these materials.
