Canada’s new $10 bill is more than just a bank note, it’s a story that’s worth knowing and sharing. As the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, this is an opportunity to say something about Viola’s story, why it matters, and encourage people to understand and appreciate why she is on the $10 bill. Not only do we share a presence on the bank note with her, we are where important stories like hers are shared. We rooted our storytelling in Viola’s act of resistance – she took a seat to take a stand against injustice. We recreated a movie theatre seat and travelled it across Canada, inviting people to take a seat for Viola Desmond. Her courage and determination are as much a part of our collective history as some of our better known stories.
