People Not Property: Stories of Slavery in the Colonial North

People Not Property: Stories of Slavery in the Colonial North is an interactive documentary from Historic Hudson Valley (HHV) that explores the history of slavery in the colonial North from the perspective of the enslaved. HHV developed the web-based project to enrich the tour experience for visitors to Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, New York, and deepen their understanding of the lives of enslaved men, women, and children. Through People Not Property we tell the story of individuals—Caesar, Sue, the 10 members of the Jackson family and others—using a mix of original videos, interviews, re-enactments, and infographics, as well as hundreds of photographs, illustrations, artworks, and other primary documents. The documentary reveals America’s history of slavery in the North, from the Middle Passage to life in the colonial cities and rural plantations of New York and beyond.
