Away from Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories website

The museum received a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to refresh and revise our signature exhibition on the history of American Indian Boarding Schools both physically and with new and updated scholarship. In conjunction, the museum made the decision to create a companion website to allow access to this material for people who could not visit the museum and to continue to collect and share information on ongoing events and research. The exhibition, Away From Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories, opened in February 2019 and the website launched in December 2019 with a corollary structure which takes visitors through the principal category topics in the exhibition as well as through time from the 1879 inception of Federal boarding schools as a way to subjugate and “civilize” American Indian populations to the reclamation and reinvention of American Indian education by Native people starting in the 1970’s.
