Art Institute of Chicago: Art Tab

Sneak some inspiration into your day. See a new, randomly selected artwork from the Art Institute of Chicago’s vast collection every time you open a new tab.

In September 2019, the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) launched its first Chrome plugin, Art Tab. AIC’s custom extension presents an artwork from the museum’s collection in your browser every time a new tab is opened. The extension focuses on selecting from over 50,000 works marked for public domain use.

Art Tab’s launch coincided with the institution’s public API launch, which provides access to a breadth of data about the collection, in addition to being a hub for data from other internal systems like our mobile app and shop products.

The browser extension is an impressive example of what one can do with our public API and will hopefully spark more ideas in the future from our community of art enthusiasts.

This project was conceived in AIC’s Experience Design department during the 2018 Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative (DAMLI) internship program and we credit our intern, Abdur Khan, for helping make this project possible.
