MuseWeb gathers cultural and heritage professionals from around the world to share the best in innovation in the sector.

Who attends? MW conferences draw a diverse group of participants from many different specialties in all types of museums, galleries, science centers, and other cultural and heritage institutions. What unites us is an interest in the use of technology to achieve our organizations’ missions and advance the field.

In order to attend MW20 online you need to become a MuseWeb member. MuseWeb membership provides you with access to virtual events and archived material from previous conferences. An annual membership costs $120 and includes a $100 registration discount for the MW conference within your membership year, or $150 + shipping to include a copy of the MW20 proceedings. If you are a full time student, annual membership costs $60 and includes a $50 registration discount for the MW conference within your membership year, or $100 + shipping to include a copy of the MW20 proceedings. Training and orientation for attending MW20 Online

The Online conference will use two primary platforms:

  1. Microsoft Teams: Download the Microsoft Teams app for easiest access to presentation sessions, including live captioning of the presentation.
  2. Second Life: Selected sessions and social events will be held on MuseWeb’s island in Second Life. Get comprehensive instructions and support in how to sign up for Second Life from our partners, Virtual Ability.

Attending MW20 Online

Links to the Microsoft Teams meeting for each MW20 Online session can be found in the MW20 program. Simply click the link to join the session. For the best experience, we recommend downloading the Teams app, but you can also join through a browser.

The closing plenary and social sessions, including Linden Lunches each day, and Saturday’s Birds of a Feature Breakfast, will be held on MuseWeb’s island in Second Life. Get comprehensive instructions and support in how to join us in Second Life from our partners, Virtual Ability, and sign up for their free online training! More dates will be added as needed.

Attending MW20 Online FAQs

Do I have to login during the actual conference, or can I access sessions on my own time?
All MW20 Online sessions will be recorded and available in the MuseWeb members area after the conference.

How do I find sessions?
All MW20 Online sessions will be listed on the Program Page, which is searchable. Click on any given session title to find more details and the link to that live or recorded session.

Do I need special equipment or accounts with particular platforms to participate?
You will need a MuseWeb Membership to attend MW20 Online. You will be able to access MW20 Online from any current browser. We recommend that you download the Microsoft Teams app for easiest access to presentation sessions. You will also need to install Second Life viewer to participate in the social sessions, Birds of a Feather Breakfast, and closing plenary.

What’s the best way for me to get ready to participate? As a presenter or speaker, can I “practice” on the platform(s) you’re using ahead of time?
Yes, please sign up for a free Second Life orientation session with Virtual Ability. Microsoft will also be offering Teams training and test sessions the week of March 23rd. More dates will be added as needed.

Is there a way to “interact” with people, or is this a broadcast event?
You will be able to ask questions of presenters and other participants by voice and text in both the Teams and Second Life sessions.

Are there any “live” social events?
Yes, all social events will be held on MuseWeb’s island in Second Life. Get comprehensive instructions and support in how to join us in Second Life from our partners, Virtual Ability, and sign up for their free online training! More dates will be added as needed.

Will there be tech support available if we’re having trouble?
Yes, a technical support volunteer will be on hand in every session.

Will transcriptions and/or video captioning be available?
Yes, CART transcription will be provided, and videos will be captioned.

Will sessions/presentations be available on mobile and tablet friendly?
Yes, we recommend that you download the Microsoft Teams app for easiest access to presentation sessions. You will also need to install Second Life viewer to participate in the social sessions, Birds of a Feather Breakfast, and closing plenary.

Are there any free events or sessions for people who want to try out the conference?
Yes, the pre-conference tours on March 31 will be free and open without a MuseWeb membership, as well as the Linden Lunches in Second Life each day.
